Description
Intended as a memorial sculpture for Georgiana Vallette Harvey, jewelry manufacturer Henry W. Harvey left monies in trust for the monument at his death in 1922. The twelve-foot statue of a standing Abraham Lincoln was only realized in 1958. The artist, Gilbert Franklin, modeled Lincoln in contemporary dress of his time: a notched collar knee-length frock coat, a six-button vest, and high-waisted flat front trousers. Lincoln sports a full beard, and his hair is thick and famously messy. In one hand he holds a sheet of paper, the other hand is clinched in a fist.
