Description

Designed by the Philadelphia architect, Paul Cret, the World War I Memorial is a large Doric column rising 115 feet above its base. On top of the shaft is a female allegorical figure of Victory. The drum at the base of the column includes carved bas-reliefs with female allegorical figures. Above their hands is a band of Westerly granite inscribed with names of American cemeteries in France: Meuse-Argonne, Aisne-Marne, and Saint-Mihiel. At the center of the drum is an octagon depicting a scene of Narragansett men meeting Roger Williams who arrives in a wooden boat and the words "What Cheer." Along the octagonal base inscriptions include quotes by Emerson, Woodrow Wilson, and Lincoln. Bronze plaques are embedded in the plaza and include scenes of an armored tank, a battleship at sea, a biplane flying through clouds and over fields, and a machine gun with two rifles with bayonets, a cartridge box, a helmet, and oak leaves.
