The Original Plans for the Memorial
The Providence Journal includes a plan to create a space to provide Providence veterans with an indoor recreation area and a hall for neighborhood gatherings. This original plan would have benefitted the families of veterans economically. [2] Considering the original plan was to not only build the memorial, but to have a way to generate income as well, the construction of the memorial fails to accomplish the entirety of the committee’s goal.
Furthermore, the current memorial was met with opposition. Another edition of The Providence Journal features a desire for the committee to consider a “living memorial” which would have been an addition to the Providence Public Library. A “living memorial” would have been interactive because it would have served a core function and been open to the public.
The column supports that a “living memorial” would be better suited to the interest of the Providence Veterans as it would “serve the greatest number in the best possible way.” [3]
