The Significance of the Position

The most striking aspect of this memorial is its positioning. The memorial faces the street, where drivers and pedestrians can easily view the bronze image displaying the four men. However, the bronze image of female military personnel is not facing the street. Instead, it is in the shadows and hardly viewed by most. Given that the memorial was moved to make it more accessible, the position of females in the back is likely intentional. With this in mind, is the public to deem the female military personnel as not worthy of acknowledgment? This memorial sets the precedent that the female contribution to the war was insignificant and unremarkable, thereby prioritizing the history of male veterans. This memorial fails to represent African Americans who fought in World War II, and does not portray the many widows who lost their husbands in World War II and were left to provide for their children with limited job opportunities.
